WHATSAPP users make huge mistakes every day – are you one of them?
We’ve rounded up some of the most common mistakes you might be guilty of.
Do not send anyone your WhatsApp code
There is a clever scam you should be aware of.
The attack revolves around the six-digit verification code WhatsApp gives when you want to regain access to your account.
It also involves a hacker taking over one of your contact’s WhatsApp accounts and sending you a message pretending to be them.
The hacker will send a message pretending to be your friend around the same time you receive an SMS or email from WhatsApp with a verification code that the hacker requested while impersonating you.
This code is only given when you try to make changes to your account.
The hacker – pretending to be your friend – will pretend they accidentally requested the verification code be sent to your number and ask you to send it.
You should never share the six-digit code with anyone.
If you do, the hacker will be able to take control of your account.
You will no longer have access to your account and the hacker may try to scam your friends and read your private messages.
If you receive a suspicious message from a friend, try calling them to see if you can talk to them in person and check what’s going on.
Make sure that your WhatsApp is not saving any media files on your phone memory.
Open WhatsApp, click on “Settings” and then on “Storage and data”.
Then click on “Chats” and turn off a toggle called “Save to Camera Roll”.
You can also prevent the app from downloading media from individual chats.
Simply go to the desired chat, click on its title at the top and change the settings via the “Save to Camera Roll” option.
Configure two-factor verification
You need to enable two-step verification right now.
This is an extra step to verify your phone number, to keep hackers out.
Hackers regularly attempt to break into WhatsApp accounts.
Hacking a WhatsApp account is an easy way to gain the trust of friends and family, which leads to even more sinister scams.
To enable two-step verification, go to Settings > Account and toggle the setting to On.
