The call came just before the summer holidays. Zana Avdiu was sitting in her mother’s apartment in the Kosovo capital Pristina. “Avoid gatherings of people,” said the police officer. Zana Avdiu recognized his voice; it was the same officer she had spoken to last winter. He said that Pristina’s nightlife district would be full of returnees from the diaspora and that they should stay away in the next few weeks.
