The Threat of Untreated Gout: A Major Risk to Kidney Health

Dr. Hossam Mowafi, Professor of Critical Cases at Kasr Al-Ainy Faculty of Medicine, explained that there is a disease that may pose a great threat to kidney health, if left untreated.

Mowafi said during his program, “My Lord, Increase Me in Knowledge,” broadcast on Sada Al-Balad channel, that the disease he is referring to is “gout,” indicating that it results from high uric acid in the blood and its accumulation around the joint of the big toe.

The professor of critical care medicine added that high uric acid in the blood increases pressure on the kidneys, which leads to deficiencies in their vital functions.

He revealed that the insufficiency of kidney function resulting from gout may develop into kidney failure, if the patient does not speed up the reduction of uric acid in the blood, through drug treatment and proper nutrition.
