The Thomanerchor Leipzig now has about twice as many members as in Bach’s time. On the way to breakfast, they walk past his bust, his portrait hangs in the center of the rehearsal room of the alumni and, of course, music by Johann Sebastian is on the rehearsal schedule week after week.
Under new management since 2021
For almost two years, the Swiss Andreas Reize has been Bach’s 18th successor in the office of Thomaskantor. However, it was still a while before he could really get started with his boys in person, because Reize initially had to work under pandemic conditions. The Thomanerchor Leipzig then set the tone under new direction with performances at the Leipzig Bach Festival last year and at the MDR Music Summer. Since Bach wrote the majority of his sacred works for the Thomanerchor, the calendar of the famous ensemble is particularly busy in the anniversary year 2023.
Visiting Leipzig
A few weeks before the concert season, Ulrike Henningsen was in Leipzig and spoke to Andreas Reize and some of his young singers about their everyday life and their enthusiasm for the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.
