The increase in coronavirus infections in Estonia has been caused by the spread of a delta variant of the virus, and the third wave of the Covid-19 epidemic has begun in the country, Illars Lanno, director of the Estonian Department of Health, said on Wednesday.

“The delta strain is very visible. In early June, there was a time when a delta strain was detected in eight to ten percent of all samples. Today we have reached 80 percent and more, “Lanno said at a press conference.

He pointed out that there are regions in Estonia where the infection rate has risen very rapidly.

“If we look at the forecasts until August, we see that there will be 150 infections a day in mid-August. It is all in the hands of our own people. For the most part, we are seeing an increase in the number of infections in Southern Estonia, ”said the head of the Health Department.

The delta strain is the most infectious strain of the new coronavirus since the beginning of the global pandemic. It was first detected in India several months ago, but has spread rapidly and is contributing to a faster increase in Covid-19 cases, even in countries where vaccination is very active. Due to the prevalence of this type, many countries have renewed restrictions that they had only recently lifted.

The 14-day cumulative number of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 population estimated by the Estonian Department of Health is currently 41.8. Two weeks ago, it was 30.9.
