Laughter is one of the essential physical and neurological activities of the human being, which differentiates humans from other living things. A complex process with numerous benefits for the whole body, laughter is also considered a therapeutic way to support health and defeat disease. According to doctors, the properties of laughter on physical and mental well-being have been observed since ancient times. With the development of psychology and neuroscience, scientists have become increasingly interested in the phenomenon of laughter and its therapeutic use. Today, laughter is considered an innate ability, universally understood and that occurs unconsciously, regardless of the person’s will.
Although it is known that it is produced by certain thoughts or situations that people experience, the brain mechanisms by which laughter is produced are, for now, insufficiently known. However, laughter therapy emphasizes the benefits to the body that a portion of laughter produces: the heart pumps more blood, and the lungs receive more oxygen as a result of the acceleration of breathing. At the same time, laughter also stimulates a greater production of endorphins and other neurotransmitters, with an analgesic and euphoric effect. In addition, neuroplasticity intervenes at the brain level, which over time leads to a change in attitude: you become more positive and have a better general mood.
