The therapeutic potential of stem cells harvested at birth is not only a frequent topic of discussion these days, but also an amazing reality that begins to reveal its secrets even before children are born. Recent discoveries emphasize once again that these valuable cells can benefit both the baby and the whole family, including the mother, even during pregnancy!
Heart repair with stem cells
Researchers from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine have realized discoveries remarkable related to the therapeutic benefits of fetal stem cells on the maternal heart. These special stem cells, easily isolated from the placenta, demonstrate amazing properties, such as migrating to the mother’s heart and replacing damaged cells.
“These stem cells have the ability to migrate to the damaged area of the mother’s heart and support the recovery process after a heart attack or other damage during pregnancy. Later, these stem cells reprogram themselves to become functional heart cells, thus contributing to its restoration”explains Dr. Bogdan Coltor.
By recreating this phenomenon in a controlled environment, researchers are opening new perspectives in the treatment of heart disease.
Diseases that can be treated with stem cells
So far, researchers have been able to establish that in placental tissue there are also immunoevasive cells, which can be used in the treatment of diseases for any member of the family.
Thus, there are already more than 85 conditions for which there are standardized indications for use and clinical trials with promising results, which suggest that diabetes, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, pulmonary fibrosis and many other conditions can be successfully treated using placental stem cells.
Additionally, globally, there are more than 80 conditions that have standardized protocols for the use of hematopoietic stem cells harvested at birth, including certain types of leukemia, multiple sclerosis, congenital blood disorders, neuroblastoma, and metabolic disorders.
During this time, in Romania, over 80% of the stem cell units released and used were administered to children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy or aplastic anemia. In fact, Romania is among the few countries in Europe where parents have the option to harvest the largest amount of stem cells available at birth, by harvesting the entire placental tissue.
“The collection is carried out in the hospital, regardless of its location in Romania, being carried out by the doctor who assists the birth, after both the mother and the baby are safe, and the placenta has been expelled. The procedure involves no risks or pain”concluded Dr. Coltor.
