Types of eczema and treatment

During his surgery, this dermatologist looked at the different types of eczemasuch as atopic dermatitis (or atopic dermatitis), contact allergy and contact irritation, offering the keys to its identification, and indicating which are, today, the main therapeutic options available to patients.

Referring to Atopic dermatitis, stressed that it is the second most prevalent skin disease after acne, and that its incidence has increased significantly in recent decades, ranging from 15% to 25% in adults. As for the treatment of inflammation, he highlighted corticosteroids as a top treatment, although he also referred to the “new wave” of monoclonal antibodies, which “will provide more weapons to cure patients who are going through a very bad time” .

Beyond inflammation, he highlighted the need to “improve the barrier function”, highlighting, in this sense, the value of emollients and soap-free hygiene products (so-called syndet) as essential in the daily life of these patients. .

Regarding allergic contact eczema, she observed the emergence of “a plague” of reactions to the acrylates used for gel nails that many women now wear, although until now the main allergens have been metals and cosmetics, such as fragrances. Her treatment will require elimination of the substance, “although it can be helped with systemic emollients or corticosteroids,” she said. Finally, you have proposed a similar approach for irritative contact eczema.

Revolution

The doctor Alba Crespo, dermatologist and medical director of Pierre Fabre, closed the meeting by thanking Ortiz de Frutos for his magnificent presentation and underlining the “revolution” experienced by the treatment of eczema. He also referred to the health products Dexyane Med and Dexyane Med Palpebral, from Ducray Laboratories, which belong to a range of products “created together with dermatologists to meet the needs of patients with eczema”, and which they have confirmed, through clinical studies , good tolerability, as well as its effectiveness against the signs and symptoms present in eczema. In the case of Dexyane Med, a study was conducted in combination with corticosteroids in patients with atopic dermatitis, which showed “a more rapid improvement, from the third day, compared to the control group”.
