The Theory of Everything: A Visually Stunning and Mysterious Film Noir Thriller

Even the title sounds a little megalomaniacal: “The Theory of Everything” is the name of the feature film by the young director Timm Kröger. A black and white film in the style of Hitchcock and Edgar Wallace, crime thriller, film noir and much more.

“The Theory of Everything” offers a variety of possible perspectives. He is creating a mysterious multiverse, but not with the usual superheroes that we otherwise know from blockbusters, says Timm Kröger. In Marvel’s superhero films, the term is always used to first tell the end of the world and then the saving of the world. “We looked at the multiverse a little differently,” says the director.

A film like a surprise bag with – above all – aesthetically impressive stuffing. The protagonist Johannes Leinert once asks himself whether there might not be parallel worlds in which things are different. Leinert is played by Jan Bülow, who most recently impressed as Udo Lindenberg in “Mach Dein Ding”.

The film “Lindenberg! Do your thing!” tells Lindenberg’s life story from his childhood in Westphalia to his big breakthrough in the 1970s in Hamburg. more

A young physicist who accompanies his doctoral supervisor to a conference in the Swiss Alps in 1962 and falls in love with a mysterious jazz pianist. Old Nazis and new underground nuclear tests also play a role. The body of a professor also poses a mystery to the local police:

“The cervical vertebra is in an extraordinary position.”
“Impossible, actually.”
“A forensic phenomenon.”
“To be honest, we think it’s unlikely that this accident was an accident.” Dialogue from “The Theory of Everything”

So a murderer is being sought. However, the supposedly dead professor reappears alive a short time later. Did Leinert just imagine it all, dream it, or are false leads deliberately laid out to deceive the audience?

The evident and the eventual mix here in a fascinating way. Time and space continuity are largely suspended. The whole thing in black and white, in the style of Hitchcock, Edgar Wallace or Orson Welles. And there are a few references that can be recognized, although they are not crucial for the director.

“I am very aware that not everyone has studied the film canon of the 20th century,” says Kröger. He also has this much less than many other people. “I never wanted just a collection of quotes, a cinephile guessing game where you have to know film history to know this film.”

Now, “knowledgeable” is a bit too exaggerated anyway, similar to the title. A lot can be achieved if you don’t completely lose your bearings. “The Theory of Everything” hides and retains many secrets and leaves a lot of room for interpretation – and not just when it comes to the police’s questions to the young physicist:

“Mr. Leinert, we have a few more questions, for example: What did you do with a ten-year-old boy here in the village? Who is Karin?” Quote from “The Theory of Everything”

In any case, there is no question that Timm Kröger made a visually stunning, enigmatic film. “The great thing about cinema is that right from the start it’s somewhere between art and circus. It can be a roller coaster ride and it can be a death meditation and everything in between,” he says.
