For the first time a TV crew enters social institutions

Violence, harsh living conditions and lack of adequate professional care. This was stated by European experts after visiting some of the homes for the mentally ill and mentally retarded in our country. Their conclusions are included in a preliminary report on the condition of some Bulgarian psychiatrists, which deals a serious blow to the reputation of our country. The actual report will be released in March next year.

A NOVA team is the first to enter three of the homes for which Bulgaria has been condemned. This week in “The Theme of NOVA” the author Gloria Nikolova and the cameraman Dimitar Vassilev tell how their inhabitants live and what infuriated Europe. The state calls them “consumers,” and few outside the home know they exist. Apart from everyday cases, the lack of adequate professional care and activities to make sense of existence is becoming a real problem for these people. The staff is insufficient and almost always of retirement age.
