The Tesco network’s profit fell by almost half year-on-year

According to company spokesman Václav Koukolíček, the coronavirus pandemic and related measures related to sales restrictions, such as shortening opening hours or banning the sale of selected non-food products, had a significant impact on the economy. The spokesman told ČTK.

According to Koukolíček, Tesco Stores ČR had increased costs for ensuring hygienic safety in its operations in connection with the pandemic in the last financial year. “Other additional costs included extraordinary rewards for our employees. In the case of compliance with hygienic measures, it was an amount of several hundred million crowns, “he said.

According to the annual report in the financial year 2020/2021, Tesco operated over 180 stores in the Czech Republic. They include shopping malls, hypermarkets and smaller local store formats. The company also included 17 petrol stations and the Žabka franchise network with approximately 130 stores. The company’s portfolio also includes the F&F clothing brand.

Approximately 8,000 people worked for Tesco. The company spent about 4.7 billion crowns on personnel costs.

The largest food chain in the Czech Republic is Lidl. In the financial year 2019/2020, it reported sales of 63.6 billion crowns, net profit was 5.8 billion crowns. Lidl, like Kaufland, belongs to the German retail group Schwarz. Albert, Penny Market, Billa and Globus also operate on the market.
