Stroke is often seen as a terrible scourge. In Indonesia, stroke is one of the diseases that causes the most deaths.
Not only that, strokes often come suddenly. A stroke that is not treated immediately can cause permanent damage to the brain and even cause death.
Neurology specialist Dr Mohammad Kurniawan, SpS(K), FICA, MSc, said stroke is an emergency caused by problems with the blood vessels to the brain. Not only in Indonesia, stroke is also considered a terrible scourge for the world community.
“Every 3 seconds there is 1 new stroke patient in the world. The growth is approximately 12.2 million new stroke cases per year in the world,” he said in an online press conference, Friday (27/10/2023).
Dr. Mohammad said a stroke occurs when symptoms of a nervous breakdown appear. The symptoms or characteristics of stroke include:
Paralysis of one half of the limbs, half-sided sensibility disorder, sudden change in mental status, aphasia, which is a language disorder that makes it difficult for a person to communicate, drooping face, impaired speech, visual impairment, diplopia
In line with that, quoted from the Mayo Clinic, stroke can also cause symptoms such as:
Sudden changes in behavior, especially increased agitation Convulsions Nausea or vomiting
Immediate Go to Hospital Slogan
Dr. Mohammad added that the characteristics of a stroke can be easily remembered through the slogan ‘SeGeRa Ke RS’.
“The SeGeRa Go to Hospital slogan is an abbreviation of the symptoms and signs of stroke that we can remember together and educate our colleagues,” he said.
The slogans include:
Asymmetrical smile (turned to one side, choking, difficulty swallowing drinking water suddenly. Movement of half of the body weakens suddenly Slurred speech/suddenly unable to speak/can’t understand words/speech doesn’t connectNumber or numbness, or tingling in half body Myopic vision blurred in one eye, occurs suddenly Severe headache that appears suddenly and has never been felt before Impaired balance function, such as feeling spinning, movements that are difficult to coordinate (tremors, shaking, staggering)
