The Terminator: The Missing Cyberdyne Systems Scene and the Questionable Casting Choice

In 1984, the then relatively unknown director James Cameron released the sci-fi action film The Terminator with Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film became a classic and received several sequels. It is striking that an important scene has been cut from the film.

Now producer Gale Anne Hurd has revealed that Cameron was forced to cut a standout scene. And for questionable reasons. Financiers wanted their friends to be in the movies, rather than professional actors.

Cyberdyne Systems
The scene would be shown at the end of the movie. It shows how the company Cyberdyne Systems obtains a chip from a Terminator. That way they know how to set up Skynet.

“Terminator financier John Daly had a deal with Orion Pictures, but hadn’t made a hit yet that changed with our movie and Platoon)” Hurd explained. “They insisted we use the financier’s friends in this scene, which ruined it for us.”

Still a success
Cameron eventually cut the scene because “the actors” weren’t good enough. In the end it didn’t matter for the success. The sequel Terminator 2, also by Cameron, was perhaps even more successful.

“They were paid as actors, through the Taft Hartley act,” continued the producer. “I think he insisted they be in the film because the financiers had been promised a return on their investment and had not yet received it. Daly did not believe the film would be a success.”
