Ten years of influence over IS
More than 160 guests from different communities took part in the World Kobanê Day celebration in Frankfurt am Main on Thursday, which was held in collaboration with the Willy Praml Theater and the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung and under the auspices of ‘ City Councilor Tina Zapf Rodriguez, head of the department for climate, environment and women.
After a moment of silence, theater director Willy Praml gave a welcoming speech in which he emphasized that the people of Kobanê have been against IS for ten years. Zapf-Rodriguez: The women in Kobanê have been examples
In a video message, supporter Tina Zapf-Rodriguez paid tribute to “the courageous defenders against the so-called Islamic State” who fought against terrorism, oppression, deprivation of human and women’s rights, and against IS’s reign of terror. “The women in Kobanê became role models for many oppressed women. They defended their country, their city and their rights. Women resisted and did not accept their oppression. They fought, suffered injuries and fell […] It is important that we remember these women and their struggles.”
Omar: We will keep Rojava alive
Afterwards, the European representative of the Democratic Self-Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), Dr. Abdulkarim Omar, the speaker, expressed the strength and determination of the people who resisted the violence, the embargo and military attacks in Rojava and Kobanê over the past ten years. Omar said that all the values that were destroyed, from hospitals to urban infrastructure, from education sectors to health and social sectors, will be rebuilt with the self-power of the people and with the support of international solidarity, and IS could not bring Kobani to its knees. . Dr. Omar confirmed that people are not leaving Rojava – despite all the hostilities and occupation attacks for several years. He reminded everyone that there is still a great need for international solidarity and support for the liberation of the cities of Afrin, Serekaniye and Girê Spî in Turkey. The AANES representative ended his speech with a call to keep Rojava alive and stable, especially because of the current attacks by the Turkish state.
City friendship: What binds us to Rojava
The organizing groups presented their work, with the Frankfurt-Kobanê City Friendship Association expressing the need to take a clear position against Turkish nationalism and Islamism here as well: “We are connected to Rojava with a universal idea of freedom and equality.”
Reading, music and performance
After that, the actress Birgit Heuser read from texts by women who were involved in the struggle against Kobanê in 2014. Some have already been published in the book “We know what we want “. A text by Evin Nejdet, who wrote the story of Sara Xelil, will appear in an anthology soon. The audience was visibly moved by the women’s memories.
At the end, the famous musician Lale Koçgün from Dersim and her ensemble performed pieces from Mesopotamia in the Soranî, Goranî, Kurmancî and Kirmançkî languages. After the musical offering, the photo exhibition “Jin Jiyan Azadî – Achievements of the Women’s Revolution” was displayed in the corridor. It was developed by Kongra Star, Free Women in Syria Foundation (WJAS) and Women Defend Rojava and deals with Rojava resistance, women’s cooperatives, Jinwar women’s village, organic women’s agriculture, training in institutions health and universities, vocational training, women’s communities and Jineoloji, women’s science and life.
