The Tenth Riga International Film Festival: Opening with Estonian Director Rainer Sarnet’s Comedy ‘The Invisible Battle’

The tenth Riga International Film Festival (Riga IFF), which will take place from October 12 to October 22, will be opened with a screening of Estonian director Rainer Sarnet’s comedy “The Invisible Battle”, the organizers of the festival informed the agency LETA.

The festival opens with a film made in Latvia, however, for the first time in the existence of Riga IFF, such an honor has been given to a genre of cinema – kung fu comedy.

Latvian studio “White Picture” participated in the creation of the work selected for this year’s opening, while most of its shooting took place in Latvian cities – Riga, Liepāja and Straupe – and several names of local actors can be found in the ensemble of actors.

Sarnet’s black-and-white linen allegory “November” received the main award of RIGA IFF 2017, and also won a total of more than 20 international and national awards.

The representatives of the “White Picture” studio are pleased with the film “The Invisible Battle” and the opportunity to create a work in cooperation with the Baltic States. This is the first cooperation of the studio “White Picture” and producer Alice Gëlze with Estonia, which is successfully continued while working on the studio’s next films.

The organizers of the Riga IFF state that the film “The Invisible Battle” is satire-filled cinephile cinema with humor and signs understandable to Baltic people. It contains references to Hong Kong martial arts films inspired by Ang Lee’s 2000 film “The Tiger and the Dragon”, Quentin Tarantino’s 2003, 2004 film “Kill Bill” and Bruce Lee’s work, as well as a connection to the popular but absurd 70 during the Soviet era. .the musical cinema of the year. The opening screening of the Riga IFF will take place on October 12 at 19.00 at the “Splendid Palace” cinema.

Celebrating the decade of the festival, Riga IFF will offer the audience more than 100 full-length and short-length cinematographic works, which shed light on current cinema trends and the most important authors of contemporary cinema. The program created by a team of professional local and foreign curators will be shown for 11 days in several cinemas in Riga, and some of the films in the program will also be available online throughout Latvia. In parallel, a program of events for industry professionals, as well as a set of public events for the wider public, will also take place.
