If Pedro Sánchez expected that the debate held last night with Alberto Núñez Feijóo was going to change the sign of a campaign in which he carries the cards of the loser, he fell far short of achieving his objectives. If Feijóo thought that face to face could free him from the annoying noose that Vox has put on him since the local and regional elections in May to get closer to July 23 without that mortgage, he did not succeed either. The debate held in Atresmedia, the only one that the PP leader has agreed to hold, was a tense gibberish with continuous interruptions and reproaches, in which at some point personal disqualification was touched. Núñez Feijóo skillfully managed to disqualify his opponent with the great burdens of the legislature that is ending, fundamentally the effects of the so-called law of only yes is yes and his alliances with Bildu and Esquerra Republicana. This allowed him to counteract, at times more forcefully than at others, the only line of attack that President Sánchez could display: the agreements with Vox and the effects of those agreements on policies such as the fight against violence against gender. In this sense, it can be concluded that the PP candidate did not lose the debate. He gave the impression of having done his homework and of being prepared to govern, although on some issues, such as macroeconomic or international policy, he exhibited obvious gaps. But basically the undecided voters who watched last night’s debate do not have elements that serve to resolve their doubts. The proposals were lacking and the one that Feijóo presented to ensure the government of the most voted list did not go beyond a purely testimonial dialectical dribble in view of what has happened in Extremadura. In short, the face to face served to verify the tense situation in which Spanish politics is being debated and did not clarify how the PP and PSOE candidates would address the great challenges of the next legislature.
