The tennis world is sad. The two-time Grand Slam champion and Hall of Famer has died

In his most successful year, Savitt’s Grand Slam triumphs saw him rise to no. 2 in the world rankings and gracing the cover of Time magazine. Among American tennis players, only Don Budge, Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras managed to win the Australian Open and Wimbledon in one year.

Savitt ended his tennis career at age 25 after winning the US Indoor Championships in 1952. He later worked in the oil business and was a stockbroker. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1976.
