Sustainability is becoming more and more important for many people, even when planning holidays. A ranking shows which cities are a model here.

Traveling was almost impossible during the corona pandemic and nature has had the opportunity to recover a bit. The provider of luxury travel Club Med included various aspects for an analysis, including air quality, water distribution, number of citywide bike lanes and number of existing ones vegetarian and vegan restaurants. The result: Freiburg im Breisgau is Germany’s most sustainable city.

Freiburg is a true eco-metropolis: 82 percent of the city is made up of green spaces, which means that it is literally the greenest city in the assessment together with Aachen. Travelers can look forward to more than 2,000 cycle paths in Freiburg, which ensure sustainable traffic. The city also has nearly 1,700 waste disposal facilities. The Saxon state capital, Dresden, took second place in the rating: It may not score with as much green space (69%) as Freiburg, but it has over 6,000 cycle paths. Chemnitz follows in third place with 79% green area and relatively sustainable water consumption (97 liters per inhabitant per day).

Sustainable vacation spots in Germany: Baden-Württemberg, Hesse and Saxony do well

The top 10 in the analysis have contributed to sustainable urban development with various sustainability projects, such as Club Med reported. They would advocate a philosophy that cares for more environmental protection and leads to a greener future. With Freiburg, Karlsruhe and Stuttgart, three cities of Baden-Württemberg have entered the list of the most sustainable cities in Germany. The same is true for Hesse with Frankfurt, Wiesbaden and Kassel. With Dresden and Chemnitz, Saxony is represented twice in the top three. Federal states such as Bavaria, Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia or Schleswig-Holstein have no cities in the top ten in the sustainability ranking Club Med Done.
