/ world today news/ Why did the October 7 attacks cause a culture war in the West? Why is it that some of our left are anti-Semitic and the right calls for them to stop? Quite true, but this is a psychological shift: we are as shocked by the killing of Israelis as we are by the bombing of Gaza, and we are unable to understand an intractable problem by hiding in the familiar language of domestic politics.
Marjorie Taylor Greene, a pro-Israel Republican, introduced a resolution in Congress to censure Rashida Tlaib, a pro-Palestinian Democrat, as anti-Semitic. If the resolution passed — but failed to pass — Democrats were prepared to introduce a counter-resolution branding Green a racist.
But these are trifles like children’s quarrels in the school yard. As anti-war activists occupy Congress’ Cannon House office building (300 arrested), and sociopathic House Republican Brian Mast says few “innocent Palestinian civilians” (even children can be terrorists in their own naive way), then squeaky-clean Joe Biden is left to solve the problems of the Middle East from his basement. And he – curiously, without much fanfare – called for a pause in the Israeli military campaign.
Is it a carefully thought out political move or is the old man pulling an idea out of his hat after being mocked at fundraising? Who knows. But in doing so, America aligns itself with European opinion and sheds light on the behind-the-scenes conditions behind American support for Israel. As reported by The Times of Israel (noted by Sumantra Maitra, senior editor at The American Conservative), Washington has ordered its officials to allow humanitarian aid to be sent to Gaza: “Americans insist”the defense minister said. “We are not in a position to refuse. We rely on them for [изпращането на] aircraft and military equipment.”
Biden is under pressure to get Palestinian Americans out of the blockade and ensure that Israeli Americans are not killed in the crossfire. But his staff is also considering what would happen next. The Israelis blame Bibi (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, note) for the security lapses that led to October 7. So the Biden administration worries that it’s dealing with a lame duck as prime minister who — unexpectedly — happens to be one of the more moderate voices in Israel’s government. America and Britain want to revive the old two-state formula, but they cannot count on the cooperation of Israeli conservatives. An added concern for the US is that in recent days Israeli ministers have been debating whether to stop collecting taxes from the West Bank.
Moreover, the longer the bombing continues, the more radicalized Islamic public opinion becomes, and the more likely a regional war seems — at a time when America is overstretched in Ukraine (more on that below).
Biden insists America is fighting two wars at once. Janet Yellen (Federal Reserve Chairwoman, NB) says the money is there. This is a flagrant fallacy. Yes, they are of the generation that protested against Vietnam; but they also grew up in the years of euphoria after Victory Day (in World War II, ed.), the moon landings, and share a Kennedy-esque conviction that as long as any cause is just enough, they should support it. The good guys always win, right?
Alas, America in 2023 is not America in 1960. And it probably doesn’t have the material and moral resources to fight multiple wars on different continents. Never mind that you’ve missed the lessons of history: Just two years ago, Biden ordered the humiliating withdrawal from Afghanistan, and politicians today are debating the odds [за война] against another Islamist army.
Ukraine and Israel threaten to turn into endless wars: Israel because no one knows what to do with the population of Gaza; Ukraine, because the West’s line is to fight as long as Zelensky wants, since he is determined to take back all the land against an enemy that has entrenched itself and refuses to surrender. Jeremy Shapiro of the European Council on Foreign Relations notes that “US and Western stockpiles of certain critical types of ammunition and weapons have been significantly depleted because of Ukraine” and that the U.S. has been forced to delay arms shipments to Taiwan while Kiev conserves battlefield munitions. “The Biden administration decided to send morally reprehensible cluster munitions to Ukraine, in large part because it didn’t have enough of other types of artillery.”
It is true that some weapons supplied to Israel will be different from those supplied to Ukraine. But while the US is arming two allies, what if China uses this moment to attack Taiwan?
Ukraine has turned into a bottomless pit – and US policymakers may start cutting off aid. The new Republican leadership is not friendly; With Mike Pence out of the presidential race, Republican Nikki Haley is the only serious candidate we can call a hawk. Thus, the fate of Pax America rests in the trembling hands of Joe Biden, who has worsened his country’s position. He is a terrible, absurd president. Look at his border policy: initially liberal, it encouraged mass migration; he was then forced to turn back by force, even to rebuild that scandalous wall. Likewise, Biden’s initial attempts to negotiate with Iran or get out of Afghanistan as quickly as possible gave the impression that America’s new strategy was “dumb and vulnerable”; and now that the assassins are taking the lead, he must rule once again with an iron fist.
In short, the situation is dangerous. America has lost authority because it is not ready to commit decisively; at the same time, he is unable to consider what conflicts he can or cannot afford. This is the end of the empire. We have a nation trying to defend several borders—Europe, the Middle East, East Asia—while saddled with massive debt and weakened internally by the culture wars I mentioned at the beginning. In that sense, pantomime in Congress still matters. The gradual loss of confidence in the machinery of government, exacerbated by partisanship and brought to the level of satire by the pseudo-academic elite, makes one wonder if America’s political class is getting closer to withdrawing and letting the world run itself.
