The Tejerina Foundation is committed to oncoplastic surgery in breast cancer by reducing the emotional impact on women

MADRID, 28 One. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Breast Pathology Center – Fundación Tejerina is committed to oncoplastic surgery in breast cancer because this method removes the tumor and remodels the breast at the same time, which reduces the emotional impact on women.

This surgery, unlike others, combines the principles and techniques of plastic surgery to preserve the woman’s breast, something that, according to the foundation’s experts, has repercussions on the image of the patient in an area that is highly relevant to her femininity, self-esteem and sexuality.

“Oncoplastic surgery is a modern way of understanding breast surgery in the 21st century. This intervention allows us to operate on breast cancer, preserving the breast and at the same time taking care of the aesthetics and shape of the breast. With it, we avoid performing a
mastectomy to 70 percent of patients who have to undergo surgery for breast cancer, reducing the psychological impact of this intervention”, explained Dr. Antonio Tejerina, oncology and plastic surgeon.

In this regard, the professional adds that it is important that this intervention is in the hands of a multidisciplinary team, made up of an oncological surgeon and a plastic surgeon, to jointly treat the patient and his illness.

The psycho-oncologist at the Breast Pathology Center, Fátima Castaño, has explained the main differences between oncoplastic surgery and mastectomy, an operation that, in her opinion, implies an important change in the patient’s life. “This type of surgery affects the patient’s image by affecting a body area that is highly relevant to her femininity, self-esteem and sexuality. Appropriate surgery adapted to the needs and wishes of the patient is a tool in the rehabilitation process, since it offers the possibility of recovering and maintaining the image prior to the diagnosis, helping to improve your self-esteem, positively impacting your relationship with your body and your sexuality”, he stated.
