Four of the best known works in the history of theater arrive in Zaragoza. Delicias Clásicas, the first edition of the Classic Theater Festival of the Aragonese capital, will be held at the Teatro de Las Esquinas between June 28 and July 2. Sara fernandez, Deputy Mayor of the Zaragoza City Council and Minister of Culture, and Alfonso Gomez, president of the Municipal Board of Delicias, presented the cycle in the company of Carlos Martin, artistic director of the Teatro de las esquinas, and Rachel Anadón, head of programming at the Teatro de las Esquinas.
“The cycle revisits classic works to bring them closer to young audiences and increase the number of people who go to the theater”, explained Gómez, who indicated the intention of the festival to settle in the Delicias neighborhood and, in the near future, “spread throughout the city.” Fernández described the existence of a summer classical theater festival as “suitable” and puts Zaragoza at the height of “Other cities that have turned this type of cycle into a summer tradition”. The deputy mayor warned of the “great programming” of the festival and wished for the future to “see more editions” of this cycle that is born in 2021.
Classic Delights kicks off on Monday June 28 with the opening of the festival, but it will be on Tuesday 29 when the curtain rises for the first time. On Hellish Celestine, the Teatro Corsario company revisits the classic by Fernando de Rojas with almost human-sized puppets, in a performance dedicated to adult audiences. On the 30th Histrión Teatro takes Juana ‘La Loca’, the queen who did not want to reign, in a show about the life of the daughter of the Catholic Monarchs through the eyes of Juana herself.
The adaptation of one of the most important novels in Spanish literature will be the appointment of the Classic Theater Festival on Thursday, July 1. Albacity Corporation takes the stage with The guide of Tormes, in a version with live music by José Luis Montón, to show the lowest of the society of the time. Classic Delights closes its poster with The daring, from La Chana Teatro, which takes a walk around the Odyssey of Homer keeping the spectator in tension throughout the duration of the tragedy.
Anadón insisted on the need for the public to approach the Corners to learn about the operation of the cycle and that it is the first edition of the festival: “This is just a small sample, we want Classic Delights to grow at all levels in the coming years”. The person in charge of programming commented that the classic works are represented “with fresh adaptations, for young people” and that the maximum of the cycle is “To ensure that the festival generates a regular audience for the theaters”.
All the performances of the Zaragoza Classical Theater Festival they start at 7.30 p.m.. The price of the tickets is 12 euros by function, although it exists a subscription for 40 euros that allows attendance to the four performances of the cycle.
