The Teatro de la Maestranza presents the 2022-2023 Season

This act has been chaired by representatives of the consortium Institutions. In this way, the Seville City Council has been Maria Sonia Gaya SanchezLieutenant of Mayor Delegate of the Presidency and Treasury Area; Patricia of the Well as Minister of Culture of the Junta de Andalucía; Joan Francesc Marco, Director General of the National Institute of Performing Arts and Music; the deputy of the area of Culture and Citizenship, Alexander Moyano, by the Provincial Council of Seville; as well as the Director General of the Theatre, Javier Menendez.

Palpating the epidermis can bring out the interior. We have lived two years without touching each other, socially distant, hidden by fear and masked our skin. But the time has come, at last, to discover yourself. The time has come to touch and to be touched: it is time to make skin in the community friction of a theater.

Touching, pressing the dream of a show made flesh on a stage, that theatrical skin capable of exhibiting on its surface all the depth, beautiful or contemptible, of the human being. The opera, the music, the dance touch us, pierce us, penetrate our apparent immunity and move us.

The Maestranza Theater presents the 2022 2023 Season — Presentation Maestranza Season 2022-2023

Being moved, agitated, that’s what it’s all about. To a theater we are going to touch the emotion with the shared yolk of a collective heart. We are in luck. Now we can once again be fully touched, whether by our neighbor in the seat or by the scenic hurricane of laughter or tears. Not being afraid to touch, to play, turns our vulnerability into a strength.

The Teatro de la Maestranza, in a season with 4 opera titles never seen in Seville, with more dance and an even more varied and attractive programme, invites us to return to the happy routine of being full-fledged citizens who, face to face discovered, they share the excitement of culture.

Even Maestranza himself -sharing the delicious I’m a narcissist, a comedy of genuine black humor that catapulted Raquel García-Tomás to the National Music Award. – As he has already begun to do, he breaks the usual isolation of cultural spaces, he also comes out of himself and plays fraternally with another theater, the Lope de Vega.

To touch is to come into contact. Receive a transfer. Let yourself be enshrined by a master’s degree. The admiration and joy for the transmission of the great masters –Alicia Alonso, Antonio Gadesthe Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra beside Maria João Pires, Maurice Bejart and his invocation of Freddy Mercury and the dancer Jorge Donn…- mark a season where many artists and genres touch, rub against each other, whether physically –Mariola Cantarero and Marina Herediahow Archangel and the guitarist Gallardo del Rey, making lyrical and flamenco touch, expanding their horizons without repelling each other. With this dance of brushes and crosses, culture, forced into virtual isolationism by the pandemic, recovers one of its driving forces: creativity in motion.

Of course, creation also places us in front of the hell of the world. When touched, sparks can fly, friction. Music conjures them up so that we learn from them. Throughout the season, tyranny and abuse of authority, class conflicts but also exacerbated passions or harmful uncontrolled desires explode in the following opera titles: Roberto Devereux by Donizetti, which will feature the Armenian soprano Hrachuhi Bassénz and the tenor from Jerez Ismael Jordi facing off with two of the most demanding roles in the repertoire directed by the Canadian Yves Abel in a Welsh National Opera production.

Tosca by Puccini in a co-production between the theaters of La Monnaie in Brussels, the Montpellier Opera, the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Maestranza itself with an exciting staging by the Sevillian stage director Rafael R. Villalobos.

the short life by composer Manuel de Falla, presented with a staging by Giancarlo del Monaco and musical direction by Lucas Macías from Huelva, leading a cast led by soprano Ainhoa Arteta and tenor Alejandro Roy.

The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart with an international cast led by the baritone Alessio Arduini, the soprano Natalia Labourdette and the baritone Vittorio Prato under the baton of Corrado Rovaris, musical director of the Philadelphia Opera, who dress in the staging of the always elegant and transparent Emilio Sagi.

And finally and for the first time Jenůfa by Leoš Janáček at the Maestranza with Will Humburg musically directing a staging by Robert Carsen, one of the most exciting contemporary regists, who offers us an intimate, confidential and sober Jenůfa but, at the same time, dazzling and visually beautiful.

Let’s touch them without fear: the theater protects us.
