The Teamsters and Anheuser-Busch, the country’s largest brewer, have announced a tentative agreement on a contract that promises substantial wage gains and significant protections for job security. The agreement, reached late Wednesday, averts the strike that the Teamsters union’s 5,000 members had planned to initiate on Friday against the company’s 12 breweries across the country, known for producing popular beer brands such as Bud Light, Budweiser, Michelob Ultra, Stella Artois, and more.

Teamsters President Sean O’Brien expressed his satisfaction with the contract, stating, “Teamsters make the beer, Teamsters make Anheuser-Busch successful, and our members deserve the best contract. That is what we fought for and won today.” The sentiment was mirrored by Brendan Whitworth, CEO of Anheuser-Busch, who commented, “As America’s leading brewer, we have the best people and provide the best jobs in the beer industry.”

Contract Details and Union Recommendations

The newly proposed contract includes several key provisions that ensure workers’ well-being. Over the five-year contract period, a wage increase of $8 per hour is guaranteed, with an immediate $4-per-hour raise in the first year. On average, this translates to a 23 percent wage increase throughout the contract duration. Additionally, the agreement emphasizes significant protections for job security for all union workers.

Furthermore, the contract offers a $2,500 ratification bonus, increased pension contributions, and the restoration of retirement benefits for current and retired members. One notable aspect of the agreement is the termination of the company’s two-tier health-care plan, which currently grants different benefits to different workers.

The proposed contract and its benefits have been unanimously recommended by the Teamsters’ bargaining committee. However, it is ultimately the union members who will have the final say through a voting process. In the event of a rejection, workers will still have the option to proceed with the planned strike.

A Shifting Labor Landscape and Worker Activism

This contract agreement comes at a time of increased labor activism in the United States, with growing union popularity and a strong job market. In 2023, Labor Department data revealed that American workers were involved in 33 major strikes, the highest number in over two decades.

A wave of strikes and strike threats has recently yielded positive outcomes for union workers, often securing double-digit raises. Last year, nearly 340,000 Teamsters members at UPS won what labor experts consider the company’s most favorable contract to date. Part-time workers, in particular, received raises of nearly 50 percent over five years.

Prior Concerns, Job Security, and Automation

Prior to the agreement, several Teamsters members expressed concerns regarding job security. The effects of automation and operational consolidation have led to the loss of good-paying union jobs over the years. While automation has offered increased efficiency for Anheuser-Busch, critics argue that it has also led to job cuts and, in some cases, economic downturns for local communities.

Experts point out that Anheuser-Busch InBev, the parent company of the U.S. brewing operations, has been adept at reducing costs through the implementation of automation and new technologies. The continuous drive for efficiency often involves the consolidation of breweries and a subsequent ambition to do more with fewer resources and facilities.
