The team of the National Theater production “Boy Who Saw in the Dark” has received the most nominations for the “Players’ Night”, TV3 News reports.
On Tuesday, September 15, the nominees of the “Players’ Night” award were announced at the Eduards Smiļģis Theater Museum. The Latvian National Theater performance “Boy Who Saw in the Dark” team was nominated the most in nine nominations, the second with the most nominations is the Liepāja Theater performance “Shakespeare”.
More than 110 new productions of the past theater season were evaluated and nominated by a jury of five people. It concludes that this has been a challenging year. Of course, mostly due to the adjustments introduced by Covid-19.
“We worked all summer, which was interesting, and the borders were so confusing that we really couldn’t understand where the season started, where it ended. As soon as the strict restrictions ended, the theater started showing the performances that were not achieved in the spring, so the process was very technically very interesting, ”says Undine Adamaite, a theater critic and member of the Jury Night.
At the same time, for the first time, the jury had to evaluate the performances in digital form. That is why a new nomination has been added to the already usual categories this year – “Event of the Year in the Digital Environment”. The jury does not hide its satisfaction that even in these times of crisis, theaters have been looking for alternative ways to address the audience.
“Because the season ended so unexpectedly, we have watched its performances in different contexts, those who managed to see a lot by March are others who watched the recordings in the now adapted rooms, the most difficult, yes, was this practical side. (..) I was most pleased with the search during the crisis, I really, very much appreciate those theaters that did not stop when the first shock was over, looking for what to do and how to do it, ”said Līga Ulberte, the chairman of the Gamers’ Night jury.
In terms of the number of nominations, the Latvian National Theater’s performance “Boy Who Saw in the Dark”, which took the lead this year, was nominated in a total of nine categories, including “Director of the Year”, “Actor of the Year” and “Scenographer of the Year”. The director of the theater is satisfied with the high appreciation of his team even in these crisis conditions.
“As for the previous season, there was a feeling of depression, because some of the names that were intended for each theater as the last shot were simply not realized. I will try to tell in parables if you can run and you succeed, if you have competed with high results before and you are now prevented from doing so not because you can’t, but you just can’t, it’s very, very difficult for the theater, ”admitted Director of the Latvian National Theater Jānis Vimba.
The second largest number of nominations was earned by the Liepaja Theater production “Shakespeare”. Its creative team is eligible for awards in a total of 12 nominations. Most of all – in eight categories, including “Big Form Show of the Year”, “Director of the Year”, “Actress of the Year” nominated by director Elmars Senkovs, “Shakespeare”.
The “Players’ Night” ceremony will take place, as usual, on the birthday of the genius of performing arts and reformer Eduards Smiļģis, on November 23. This time the prizes will be presented in Liepaja.
