The teaching of Italian in Australia “is no longer aimed only at descendants of Italians”

During his visit, Romano visited some of the bilingual schools in Australia and some of the so-called “managing bodies” that work for the promotion of the Italian language. “We have a multi-level system, with many entities involved in the promotion of the Italian language and culture abroad and especially in schools in foreign school systems”, Romano explained to the microphone of SBS Italian.

“This was a very important opportunity for me to visit school activities, activities of Italian language courses that are taught in bilingual schools or in any case Australian schools in which Italian is present and is taught as a curricular language”, he continued .

“Bilingual schools are already enjoying great success among many Australian families who decide to enroll their children in schools that offer the Italian language even if these families do not have Italian origins”, Romano further observed, “and this is something that absolutely positively characterizes the activities present in Australian territory”.

We also asked Romano if there is a bilingual school in the pipeline at the high school level, as well as a bilingual school.

“It is certainly appropriate to develop the educational offer in Italian in secondary schools and high schools”, he replied, adding that “we are all strongly committed as a Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an Embassy but also as individual consular offices of the Australian network of Italian consular network in Australia, to pursue this objective”.
