The taste that threatens the lungs the most

Over the years, the “classic” cigarette exists, however, new forms have been created, such as vaping (electronic cigarettes), where they are used in the daily life of many people around us.

However, these types of smoking are popular with more “innocent” habits, which encourage not only smokers, but also non-smokers to make use of these products.

As reported by ygeiamou.gr, the rapid spread of this practice has raised the concerns of experts regarding the possible health effects. Much has been said about the possible dangers, and a study from Canada has come to add information, making an important discovery: A certain flavor seems more “guilty” for lung health than others : The reason for the berry, which, according to scientists, It is associated with more impairment of lung function. The results of the new research are published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

The study shows, in particular, that e-cigarettes with a berry flavor weaken the natural defenses of the lungs, making it more difficult for the body to fight against dangerous germs. The research team, led by scientists from McGill University, studied mice exposed to flavored and unflavored e-cigarette vapor. They used imaging techniques to see how vaping affected the immune system cells in the lungs.

The research found that inhaling berry-scented vapor affected the function of immune system cells called alveolar macrophages. These cells play a vital role in protecting the lungs by detecting and removing harmful particles. However, exposing the valve to this perfume appeared to disrupt the normal pathways these cells use to navigate the lungs, making it unable to the cells that fight against harmful microorganisms.

This reduced immune response had a negative effect, especially when the mice were exposed to the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is associated with causing respiratory infections. The weakened immune defenses resulted in a lower survival rate for the mice, a finding that once again highlights the potential dangers of flavored e-cigarettes.

“We have to be careful about the types of fragrances that are used in these products. Some may have harmful consequences,” said Dr. Ajitha Thanabalasuriar, assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics at McGill University. “The way these vaping products are marketed – the colorful packaging and child-friendly design – makes them particularly attractive to a young audience, which could be dangerous for future generations. “

Need more research

Researchers are now working to find out which chemical compounds cause damage to the immune cells. The next step is to find out if similar effects occur in humans and to study the wider effects of flavored vaping on lung health.

As research continues, one thing is clear: Not all e-cigarette flavors are equally harmful. Berry flavored vaping may not be a good choice for your lungs.
