Flagship object of the 90s: the Tamagotchi, this little pixelated egg-shaped companion that we will never forget!
Ah, the 90s… the blessed era when high-waisted jeans reigned supreme, when we went to the party of the most popular girl in college and when Daft Punk began to invade our Walkmans. But for many of us, in our thirties today (or even forties!), this decade above all evokes a particular memory, an small electronic object in the shape of an egg, which rang all the time in our pockets or in our school bags: the Tamagotchi.
Launched in Japan in 1996 by Bandai, the Tamagotchi quickly won the hearts of children and adolescents around the world. France and Burgundy are not spared. This little electronic toy, whose name is a mixture of the Japanese words “tamago” (= egg) and “watchi” (= watch), was much more than a simple gadget.
It was a virtual pet, which required care and attention to grow and thrive… like a real animal, in the flesh! Feed it, play with it, clean it… Each Tamagotchi had its own character and evolved differently depending on the care provided, which made each experience unique. We were responsible for these little digital creatures, it could be a real test before adopting a real pet at home… but we had fun!
But Tamagotchi was much more than just a game. It became a cultural phenomenon, a symbol of an entire generation. From playgrounds to offices, everyone wanted their Tamagotchi! He has even influenced pop culture, appearing on television shows, in music videos… and even in cinema.
Today, when thinking about these little electronic companions, we can’t help but feel a certain nostalgia. The Tamagotchi represents an era when a small, highly pixelated screen and a few buttons were enough to escape ; a time that might seem distant to some, in the age of ultra-connected smartphones and social networks.
The Tamagotchi is back in fashion
Nowadays, it is still possible to find “original” Tamagotchi on private resale websites, at flea markets; we change the battery and we’re back to the 90s! For those who are curious, you can get a brand new one in toy stores, supermarkets or on the Internet.
