Germany’s stance was expressed on Wednesday (22/9/2021). The UN Credentials Committee is reviewing the Taliban’s request to address the UN General Assembly on behalf of Afghanistan.
Today Afghanistan is still represented at the UN by ambassadors from the government that collapsed last month.
“Scheduling a show at the United Nations will do nothing,” German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas told reporters while commenting on the Taliban’s request.

“What is important is concrete actions and not just words, including human rights and especially women’s rights and inclusive governance and distancing oneself from terrorist groups,” he said.

Maas said it was important to communicate with the Taliban, but he said, “The UN General Assembly is not the right place for that.”
