At the first official press conference since the fall of Kabul held by the Taliban on Tuesday, Islamists have stated that they want to build peaceful relations with other countries and that women’s rights will be respected in accordance with Islamic law.
“We do not want any internal or external enemies,” said Zabihulla Mujahideen, the group’s chief spokesman.
He added that women would be allowed to work and study, to be “very active in society, but within Islam”.
The Taliban will not seek revenge on former soldiers and pro-Western government officials, Mujahedin stressed, adding that the Islamist group is announcing an amnesty for both former soldiers of the Afghan government’s armed forces and Afghan contract workers and interpreters for the international military contingent.
“No one will harm you, no one will knock on your door,” a Taliban spokesman said.
He also argued that the private media would continue to be able to maintain their freedom and independence.
