The Taliban broke the big news

The Taliban have announced their first appointments, albeit acting ministers, to Afghanistan’s future government, Reuters reported.

According to the agency, Gul Aga has been appointed acting finance minister, and Sadr Ibrahim acting acting interior minister. Najibula has been appointed head of intelligence. Hamdullah Nomani became the governor of Kabul.

The Taliban intend to form a 12-member government for Afghanistan, which will include members of the previous government, Foreign Policy magazine wrote earlier today.

According to the publication, the rebels do not want to restore the presidency or nominate any other sole leader.

A Taliban spokesman, meanwhile, said the United States should not “encourage Afghanistan’s educated elite,” including doctors and engineers, to leave the country.

Zahibullah Mujahid added that for now, the Taliban will not allow Afghan citizens to leave Kabul airport, Reuters reported.

His remarks come amid more than a week of chaos at the airport in the Afghan capital, during which thousands are trying to flee the country after the Taliban seized power.

The spokesman reiterated that the date by which Western military personnel must leave the country – August 31 – is not negotiable.
