A few days after the new government took office, Hakani outlined the new policy guidelines at a press conference.
Hakani said the Taliban did not want to turn the clock 20 years ago. “We will start building on what exists today,” he said.
However, students will have restrictions, including a mandatory dress style. Hakani said hijabs would be mandatory, but did not specify whether they would be mandatory headscarves or mandatory face shields.
Gender segregation will also be introduced. “We will not allow boys and girls to study together,” Hakani said.
He said that subjects taught at universities would also be reviewed, but did not reveal details.
