The Tale of Lilies of the Valley: Celebrating Yvetta Simonová’s 95th Birthday and Her Legendary Career in Music

The Tale of Lilies of the Valley is one of more than 500 hits sung by Yvetta Simonová. And if we paraphrase the lyrics of this song, today “white lilies are blooming” especially beautifully just for this lady who celebrates her 95th birthday on Saturday. In the very first year of the Golden Nightingale in 1962, she became the most popular singer, and her tunes are still playing on the radio more than 60 years later.

Yvetta, née Roubalová, was born in Český Brod and after graduating from business school, she studied singing. She started her career as an operetta singer in Bratislava, only to focus on popular music after returning to Prague. Her first husband was Lucerna manager František Spurný, the second Jaromír Vomáčka, who became famous in 1968 with a legendary song Go home, Ivan.

Simon was invented by Werich

The name Simonová is artistic and was invented by the actor Jan Werich. Since the end of the 1950s, Yvetta has collaborated with the Karel Vlach Orchestra. His boss was a great arranger, a visionary, and he put together really first-class instrumentalists in his group. Richard Kubernát, Václav Týfa and Felix Slováček were among the most prominent.

Vlach Simonová kept her level with romantic melodic songs peppered with intelligent lyrics by Vladimír Dvořák. The audience grew old with her, but thanks to her unmistakable speech, other generations matured. Karel Vlach later became Yvette’s support in her personal life as well, and this relationship was only interrupted by his death in 1986.

Love only on stage

Two years earlier, another loss of life met Yvette. Singer Milan Chladil, three years younger than him, died unexpectedly at the age of 53 on the way from a performance in Šumava. Together, they formed an unrepeatable tandem for over 25 years, which no one else in our pop music has been able to imitate, despite many efforts.

Songs We two and time, Whiskey, that’s my gusto, Children from Piraeus or About us two they are just a small fraction of dance music interpreted at a flawless level. Despite the fact that the two singers exchanged loving glances on stage, their real relationship never crossed the line of lifelong friendship.

Simonová probably does not age. Watch the 2019 interview with the singer:
