tvN ‘The Tale of a Gumiho 1938’ ended on the 11th
3rd place in topicality in the TV/OTT integrated drama/series category in the 1st week of June
‘The Tale of a Gumiho 1938’ had very little romance compared to ‘The Tale of a Gumiho’. However, Lee Dong-wook’s performance worked this time as well. He proudly took first place in the topical ranking of performers in the TV/OTT integrated drama/series category.
The tvN drama ‘The Tale of a Gumiho 1938’ came to an end on the 11th. This work is a K-fantasy action action drama about Lee Yeon (Lee Dong-wook), a nine-tailed fox who made an emergency landing in the chaotic era of 1938 to return to the modern age.
At the wedding of Seonwoo Eun-ho (Kim Yong-ji), Lee Yeon said, “I am the last mountain god of Joseon” and removed Gato Ryuhei (Ha Do-kwon), the head of the police department of the Japanese Government-General. Ryu Hong-ju (Kim So-yeon) also punished the Japanese soldiers who visited this place. Lee Yeon left him and Cheon Moo-yeong (Ryu Kyung-soo) behind him, and after saying goodbye to Lee Rang (Kim Bum), he went back to 2023.
After Lee Yeon left, the mountain gods and the people around them worked hard in their respective places. Chun Moo-yeong decided to become a traveling lawmaker, and Seonwoo Eun-ho promoted the establishment of a Korean school. Ryu Hong-ju looked at Lee Yeon-rang, who became a true family, with a happy expression. The mountain gods fought the newly appointed governor at night.
In 2023, Lee Yeon met Nam Ji-ah (Jo Bo-ah) again on a rainy day. Lee Yeon put an umbrella over Nam Ji-ah and said, “I’m too late.” Nam Ji-ah said as she hugged Yiyeon, “I knew she would come back.”
‘The Tale of a Gumiho 1938’ succeeded in satisfying the fans of ‘The Tale of a Gumiho’, which aired in 2020. The world view featuring indigenous gods and monsters stimulated interest, and the splendid action in various confrontations that filled the play caught the attention of the viewers. Jo Bo-ah of ‘Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox’ further enhanced the connection between the two works through a special appearance. The sweet reunion of Lee Yeon and Nam Ji-ah gave excitement as it decorated the last episode of ‘The Tale of a Gumiho 1938’.
Compared to ‘The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox’, the proportion of romance was small, but the meaningful contents deeply resonated with viewers. As it is set during the Japanese colonial era, the dialogues of people related to independence drew attention. After killing the villain Gato Ryuhei, Lee Yeon said, “You are not the owners of this land.” Seonwoo Eun-ho told her father Seon Woo-chan (Lee Jae-yong), “I could have been anything. The first female newspaper reporter, the owner of the Bando Hotel, or a gold mining conglomerate. But I decided to become an independence activist. Not Tawara Kinko, but Seonwoo Eun-ho.” It left an impression.
With passionate performances by Lee Dong-wook, Kim So-yeon, Kim Bum, and Ryu Kyung-soo, the work came to an end amidst the keen interest of viewers. ‘The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox 1938’ ranked third in the topicality ranking in the TV/OTT integrated drama/series category for the first week of June announced by Good Data Corporation, an organization specializing in analyzing the competitiveness of K-content. Lee Dong-wook proved the power of the work by rising to the top of the topic of the performer.
