While the future T10 tram line should be operational by the first half of 2026, elected officials made the first rail welding this Monday, October 7, in Lyon.

There will be flame, sparks and this is the first rail welding for the future T10 tramway of the Lyon Metropolis. The first symbolic step, this Monday, which marks the progress of this project, at the foot of the Halle Tony Garnier station on the T1 tramway. By the first half of 2026, the tenth “tram” line powered by Sytral should be in working order, with Halle Tony Garnier as its destination, in the 7th arrondissement of Lyon.

There will be a total of 14 stations and 8 km of line, departing from Vénissieux station, which also serves the town of Saint-Fons. “This new axis will make it possible to offer concrete alternatives to motor vehicles. The T10 line will help connect our cities even better“, he cheered the councilor of Lyon, Grégory Doucet, together with Christian Duchêne, the mayor of Saint-Fons, and Michèle Picard, the mayor of Vénissieux.

Direct access to other transport lines

This T10 line will also be a connecting axis with metro D and tramway T4, at Vénissieux station. But also with the metro B at the Gerland stadium, or the T1 tram at the Halle Tony Garnier. “This is one more link between our cities“, laughs Grégory Doucet. In 25 minutes, it will therefore be possible to go from the Vénissieux multimodal exchange center to the German sector.

Infrastructure and development work began in 2024, with a newer connection between the future tramway and the T1 and T4 lines. After 7 October 2024, the project now includes the welding of the 2,300 rails that will make up the 8 km of the track. “Sytral made the choice, at the end of 2020, to launch the T10 and abandon the E metro, which would have stopped us financially from launching this line.“, wants to remind Bruno Bernard, president of Sytral and the Métropole de Lyon.

Cycle routes and development

More than 22,000 daily passengers are expected on the line in 2030. Including, of course, many residents of Saint-Fons, a city that does not yet have a metro or tram, as the mayor recalled. “The residents are already starting to tell me: “I can’t wait for the tram to arrive”. (…) In 2026, the tram line returns and joins Saint-Fons, making it a modern city.“, shares Christian Duchêne.

This project, with a budget of 295 million euros, benefited from financial support from the State (15.8 M €, call for projects) and 3.3 million euros from the Rhône-Mediterranean-Corsica water group. The desire of selected environmentalists of the City and Metropolis of Lyon is also to make the axis green and accessible, with in particular 5 km of plant platform and cycle paths. More than 2,500 trees will also be created. “It also allows us to take a different view of the port of Lyon. Not many people know him and he needs to focus better on the city“, adds Gregory Doucet.
