Mexico City. Regardless of who wins the next presidential elections in the United States, the USMCA is not at risk, since there is a good relationship between both countries and economic integration, and it is something known by the Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and the Republican candidate Donald Trump, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo stated this Tuesday.
Questioned in her usual press conference at the National Palace about the recent declines in the price of the peso against the dollar, the president stated that these are not related to the Mexican economy, but rather to external reasons, such as the statements of the Republican candidate, who has threatened that if he wins the elections he will impose tariffs on Mexican goods.
Sheinbaum Pardo considered in the National Palace that these are statements with electoral motives and made in the middle of the campaign, but that they do not put the T-MEC at risk.
“There are several reasons, most of which are international and have nothing to do with the Mexican economy. According to what I am informed, part of it has to do with the rate changes in Japan that affect the movement of capital around the world. The other, also according to the statements of one of the candidates for president of the United States,” he explained regarding the peso price. “I think they are campaign statements,” he said of Trump’s statements.
“The treaty is not at risk, we saw it here with American businessmen, there is economic integration and the United States already depends a lot on its main trading partner and Mexico also already has a lot of interrelation with the United States economy, and Canada too” , held.
“Regardless of who wins the election in the United States, there will be a good relationship, I am sure of it because there is integration and both the Democratic Party candidate and the Republican Party candidate know it,” she added.
He acknowledged that Mexico is registering a contraction in production, but said that it is an issue related to the droughts of recent years and he believed that there will be a recovery.
“There is a decrease, particularly in the primary sector, and it has to do mainly with the drought of the last two years, next year will be better because of the rains,” he added.
He maintained that his government has a good relationship with the private sector and that although there are disagreements on some points, there are issues on which there is consensus with businessmen.
“We agree to promote investment, to eradicate corruption, to simplify procedures, in this program that we have presented to create welfare centers,” he mentioned. “We will work well with the private sector,” he assured.
