According to those media, the emergency aid would be provided in collaboration with and supervised by the United Nations, the International Red Cross and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent. In recent days, the United Nations had already called for more and faster aid in the disaster area, and in particular in the rebel area. The UN also called for a temporary ceasefire.
Whether the Syrian government’s promise to admit more aid will actually be implemented remains to be seen. The predicament of the millions of inhabitants in the Northwest and the meager aid that has been allowed there in recent months have forced a “seeing is believing” attitude.
In any case, dozens of planeloads of emergency aid have already arrived in Syria, including from the United Arab Emirates, Russia, China and Iran. But little or none of it has reached rebel territory.
