The Sýkora decathlete moved into the top ten at the World Championships with a great discus, but was injured in the pole

All-rounder Jiří Sýkora shone in the discus at the World Championships. In the seventh discipline, he improved his personal record by almost a meter and a half to 54.39 meters and could not find a winner. No decathlete before him had performed such a feat at the World Championships. As a result, Sýkora moved into the top ten in the running order. But the situation was complicated by an injured left hand, which he suffered after his pole broke.

After an unsuccessful opening day, which ended in nineteenth place, today the only Czech all-rounder in Eugene is doing much better. Already on the hurdles, he came two hundredths of a second closer to his personal best with a time of 14.14 seconds, and then shone in the discus. With the second attempt, he moved his personal record by 75 centimeters and in the third he added another 72 cm on top.

He deprived Brian Clay of the best discus decathlon performance in the history of the WC, who threw 53.68 in Helsinki 2005 on his way to the world title. The junior world champion from 2014 moved up to eighth place before the pole vault thanks to the withdrawal of Australian Ashley Moloney. He can attack the personal record of 8122 points from last year’s meeting in Arona, Spain.

But the bar froze the euphoria. First, Sýkora saved himself for the third time at his basic height of 460 centimeters, and then he had a carom at 480. On the first attempt, his pole broke, blood was visible on the fingers of his left hand, and instead of returning to the sector, he headed to the infirmary. The eighth discipline is over for him and the question is whether and in what condition he will start the javelin.

Canadian Pierce Lepage took the lead after the discus, who can replace his more famous compatriot Damian Warner. He withdrew after failing to finish the final 400 meters on Saturday due to hamstring problems.

The fifth man of last year’s Olympics, Lepage collected 6427 points after seven disciplines and had more than a hundred point lead over Ayden Owens Delermo from Puerto Rico.
