In the Swedish parliament, 176 MPs voted in favor of Kristerson’s candidacy for Prime Minister, while 173 MPs were against.

Kristerson is expected to present the composition of his government on Tuesday morning, before going to the Swedish king Carl XVI Gustav, who will formally approve the new government.

Kristerson, 58, is an economist by training. He has been married to his wife Birgitta for over 30 years; they have three daughters. Christerson and his wife once adopted them from China; now the daughters have grown up.

Christerson on Friday announced the formation of a tripartite coalition with liberals and Christian Democrats, while maintaining close contact with the far-right “Swedish Democrats”. Four right-wing parties have 176 seats out of 349 in parliament.

To secure a majority in parliament, Kristerson must count on the support of the “Swedish Democrats”. This party in the elections held in September received the second highest number of votes.

The “Swedish Democrats” will not hold ministerial posts in the government, but will have the right to nominate their own candidates for civil service posts in government institutions.

In exchange for supporting Christerson’s government, the “Swedish Democrats” got the government to include a number of proposals in its program, mainly related to fighting crime and limiting immigration.

The leader of the “Swedish Democrats” Jimmy Okeson said that although his party would have liked seats in the new government, he is also satisfied that the “Swedish Democrats” will have influence on government decisions in the areas of immigration and justice.

The former prime minister, the leader of the Social Democrats, Magdalena Andesson, said that even if Ulf Kristerson becomes the next prime minister, Okeson will most likely set the government’s agenda.
