Passionate about swallows, Jose Demary is a happy man. Three years ago now, he designed a tower made up of nest boxes for said birds.

And prototype was installed in his garden in Foucarmont (Seine-Maritime), before this tower was made in a few copies in other places. The objective is to welcome new pairs of birds.

Three pairs of swallows

We had to wait three years and therefore this summer of 2024 for finally, swallows decide to take up residence at the level of the nest boxes of the tower, but also in simple nest boxes (his second creation) installed on the walls of his house, “That’s it, they have come” he says with a big sigh of satisfaction.

They arrived quite late. But I was lucky to have three couples and six young people on the tower. Now I know they will come back next year.

If the swallows installed at his home this summer have left, José Demary is very enthusiastic seeing the effectiveness of his achievements.

“Whether it was the towers or the nest boxes which cost less to install, I knew they were suitable for swallows. But seeing them in my home making it their habitat is simply wonderful. Last year, they were just passing through, I think they were scouting. But this year, they stayed on the tower, and also on the nest boxes on the facade.”

It is forbidden to destroy a swallow’s nest

José Demary supplied and installed more than a hundred of these nest boxes in Amiens and in various other places. “There, I have 200 others who are ready. I launched my micro-enterprise and a Facebook page, which allows me to be a little more visible and to invoice during sales. Because I offer these artificial nests for individuals, communities or even as part of compensatory measures if necessary. Remember that it is prohibited to destroy a swallow’s nest or move it. If there is no choice, it must be reinstalled in the same area. And it’s very easy” recalls the enthusiast.

The return of the house swallow was therefore a great joy for José who hopes to convince as many people as possible of the importance of offering them suitable accommodation.

Swallows like bright or white places, and to be quite close to humans.

Sad to have seen them leave for the winter period, José Demary is already looking forward to sunny days, hoping to see this year’s couples again, and many others besides.
