“The SUV and the good soul”: a story of driving in Marseille

Good and bad news. The good news is that Boulevard Henri-Barnier (15th) has been given a new surface: at the wheel of their mistreated cars, the hundreds of daily users of this endless artery will no longer have to slalom to avoid the cavities dug by the years, the bumps and other subsidences, more effective in tempering the pace than the roughest speed bumps. However, to prepare the bitumen to welcome its new tarred coat, motorists had to, for days, put up with a long dirt road revealing, at a good height, countless manholes.

It was late last week. This new driver, at the wheel of her brand new SUV, decorated with an A, sets out at the beginning of the Gavotte to reach the heights of Saint-André. Great harm came to him. With difficulty bypassing two manholes a few meters from each other, our young driver stalls in the middle of rush hour. She comes to her senses, disengages as she was taught and moves slowly towards a new obstacle. The young woman redoubles her courage and tries another approach: she accelerates to see how the road reacts and lets herself slide, both hands firmly held together in 10:10.

Misfortune. A manhole cover higher than the others causes it to brake suddenly. Desperate, desolate, the driver leaves her vehicle, crushing a tear on her cheek and signals to the single file to excuse her. No one seems to take his inexperience seriously, the rest will even assure him of the contrary.

A man, in his fifties, who was waiting for bus 25, approached the unfortunate woman and offered to drive his vehicle to the Saint-André roundabout. The young woman places her hand on her heart, pouring out “goods” in abundance, climbs onto the passenger side and, once his generosity has been demonstrated, the man walks back to his bus stop. The bad news is that the 25th has just left without him.
