It is curious how many directors have always had the desire to make a film of James Bond. Many great American filmmakers have had their wishes thwarted because the producers wanted to keep the agent as purely British as possible. It was the case of, for example, Steven Spielberg, who tried to convince them in every possible way but to no avail (curiously, they gave in at the end in ‘No Time to Die’, and Spielberg took it out on his own saga with Indiana Jones).
It is true that we are talking about directors with a certain vision, which usually also repels producers who want to have their product more tied up in short. That is why even someone infallible like Christopher Nolan has seen how the doors were closed and he could not fulfill his youthful dream. A wish that she has probably held since she first saw ‘007 on Her Majesty’s Secret Service’.
One and done
One of the best Bond movies of all time, available to view in streaming through Amazon Prime Video, which is almost an anomaly. It was produced during the temporary march of Sean Connery, with the Australian George Lazenby donning the tuxedo and drawing the gun for the first and only time. And I don’t need more to make a memorable movie, which people like Nolan consider their favorite.
Peter Hunt was the director and one of those who clearly benefited from the Broccoli’s way of promoting to maintain control of the franchise. Hunt had previously worked as an editor on Connery’s films, and later as a second unit director. ‘007 On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ was his only Bond film as a director, but like Lazenby it was enough to leave a mark.
The movie was a record change compared to the Connery era, which gradually embraced wacky humor while maintaining the elegant bill of action cinema. ‘007 on Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ innovates by offering a rawer, more intense and even violent tone, with a style that incorporates more cuts in the sequences but without losing clarity.
‘007 On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’: Inventive and Influential Action
That change included darker and more mature nuances for the character, who seemed destined for an existential change that was finally only picked up with Daniel Craig. Details that give a completely new aura to Lazenby’s film, although it maintains the top notch action around the world and in locations like snow, whose spectacular chase was a great “inspiration” for Nolan in the third act of ‘Origin’.
It is not the only Christopher film where the imprint of ‘007 on her Majesty’s Secret Service’ is noticeable. In ‘Tenet’ it is also appreciated from the general assembly, the global threat that the protagonist faces or the presentation sequence of the villain by Kenneth Branagh that is taken from here. Many significant details, showing the enormous footprint that this film has in the history of cinema and how much it is worth rescuing.
