The difference in transfer expenditure between Feyenoord and Ajax is surprising. The Telegraph wondered on Saturday why the national champion only spent 36 million euros on twelve new players, while Sven Mislintat spent no less than 109 million for the same number of players.

The newspaper takes Josip Sutalo and Luka Ivanusec as examples. The Croats both came to the Eredivisie from Dinamo Zagreb, are approximately the same age (23 to 24) and have already played ten and sixteen international matches respectively. The Telegraph cites that Ivanusec had a transfer value of approximately 13.5 million euros, but Feyenoord paid a fixed amount of eight million. Sutalo cost at least 20.5 million. That amount “astonished everyone in Croatia,” the newspaper said.
‘Not only is there an exorbitant price difference in the transfers of both players, there also appears to have been a completely different negotiating tactic. Feyenoord did everything they could to sign the player for an amount below his transfer value and with patience and a charm offensive towards the player, they succeeded tremendously,” concludes The Telegraph. ‘Ajax paid an amount for Sutalo that was just above his transfer value. Where Te Kloese nibbled off five million, Mislintat paid millions more.’

The Telegraph believes that this was structurally the case at Ajax. Georges Mikautadze, Chuba Akpom, Gastón Ávila and Carlos Forbs also had money ‘thrown out of the windows of the Johan Cruijf Arena’. Finally, the newspaper points out the differences in salary. ‘At Feyenoord, none of the star players earns more than 2 million euros. At Ajax it is double or triple that for the biggest names.’
Despite the heavy expenditure, Ajax recorded a big plus on the transfer market. It sold for around 156 million. At Feyenoord, income and expenditure on the transfer market were the same: 36 million.
