Caravan and camper ownership among young people has increased significantly in recent years. Between January 1, 2020 and September 1, 2023, ownership among Dutch people up to 25 years old increased by no less than 53 percent.
In the category 26 to 35 years, this is an increase of 35.5 percent. The total number of these types of camping equipment in the Netherlands grew by 7 percent during this period, reports the Camping and Caravan Industry (KCI).
The increase is greatest among campers. Since the outbreak of corona, this has been an increase of 13 percent. Among young people up to and including 25 years of age, this has even more than doubled (105 percent). In the age category from 26 to 35 years, the increase is 70 percent.
Chairman Leo Diepemaat of the KCI speaks of a trend break. “Caravan and camper ownership is often associated with affluent retirees, but these figures clearly show that young adults and young families have also discovered or rediscovered camping.”
According to Diepemaat, a caravan or camper has become an increasingly attractive alternative to a plane trip and all-inclusive resort for young people since corona. “Go wherever you want, regardless of tour operators, corona effects or queues at airports.”
The Dutch currently own more than 415,000 caravans and over 180,000 campers.
