Åsa Vesterlund herself told Expressen about how what started as a romance turned into a nightmare.
Her boyfriend, butt doctor Fredrik Berne, whom she first got to know as the surgeon who operated on her, became increasingly jealous and wanted, for example, access to her phone, she has stated.
– I was not allowed to change the code. It was recurring, absolutely hysterical. I kept thinking – you know, a northerner – “I can’t bear to argue”, “it will pass”, “it will get better”. But it only got worse, Åsa Vesterlund has previously said.
Berne was charged with gross breach of women’s peace, but when he was sentenced by the district court in February 2023, it was instead of gross breach of peace. The Court of Appeal also convicts Berne of gross breach of the peace and they further write that the penalty corresponds to a prison sentence of just over a year. But that the penalty is reduced when they take into account that Berne’s medical license is also still suspended.
The abuse has been “characterized by degrading elements”
The district court’s verdict included five cases of assault, from 2019 to 2021, which according to the court were “marked by degrading elements”.
”During the events, Åsa Vesterlund was further subjected to verbal abuse in combination with the physical violence”, can be read in the judgment.
The Court of Appeal shares the district court’s assessment.
– Hope this gives other vulnerable people hope for justice, says Åsa Vesterlund about the verdict.
– Incredibly nice that this is finally over, at least for me. It has been a long process, you can safely say.
She would also like to thank attorney Clea Sangborn who represented her as plaintiff’s counsel.
– I am very happy and grateful.
Chamber prosecutor Kristin Stjernrup is satisfied despite the reduced sentence.
– I share the Court of Appeal’s assessment and the conclusion they reached.
Berne refuses – will appeal
Fredrik Berne has always denied the accusations, and claimed throughout the investigation that they were made up.
His defender, Björn Hurtig, believes that the sentence “will of course be appealed”.
“The Court of Appeal has in parts completely failed to comment on my client’s evidence, which has become an increasingly common phenomenon in Swedish criminal proceedings,” he writes in a comment via text message.
He states that Fredrik Berne does not want to comment on his view on the continued process surrounding his medical identification, which was revoked until further notice after the district court’s verdict.
Expressen has on several occasions examined Fredrik Berne and his beauty clinic Klinik 34 in Gothenburg. He has repeatedly been reported to, and criticized by, the Inspectorate for Care and Care (Ivo).
In Ivo’s latest review, the authority also believes that Fredrik Berne is considered unsuitable because he has photographed undressed and sedated patients on the operating table, and then forwarded the images.
Just weeks after Berne’s Swedish identity card was revoked, he received a new identity card issued by the health authority in Dubai – in a different name.
