Dutch people gamble more money since online gambling became legal. This is evident from figures from the Gaming Authority. 2022 was the first year in which the online gambling market was open all year round, and that year was the total gross game result (the deposit minus prizes paid out) 3.4 billion euros. That is seventy percent more than the 2 billion euros of the previous year.
The revenue growth is partly due to online gambling, which accounts for almost a third of the total revenue. Physical casinos and gambling halls also did better business last year than in 2021, when they were closed for a number of months due to corona. Compared to 2019 – the last year before the corona crisis – a total of 700 million euros more was gambled.
On average, Dutch people spent 258 euros on legal gambling, which is slightly less than the European average. The Gaming Authority sees a shift from physical casino games and slot machines to online, because the revenue from physical casino locations has decreased, while the total revenue from casino games (physical and online) increased significantly.
Not enough protection
In 2019, a large parliamentary majority was in favor of legalizing online gambling, in order to regulate this market and prevent gamblers from seeking refuge on foreign, sometimes shady websites. Opponents feared that legalization would lead to more gambling addicts.
Online gambling has been legal since October 1, 2021. Last month, the Gaming Authority concluded that online gambling companies do too little to protect players from themselves.
