The US Supreme Court has banned the commission investigating the assault on the Capitol from accessing the phone records of a close confidant of former President Trump. It’s about Republican Party Arizona branch president Kelli Ward.
The U.S. Congressional Commission of Inquiry wants to look into Ward’s phone traffic before the assault. They view former President Trump’s supporter as a spider in the web during the onslaught and occupation of parliament on January 6 last year.
Ward had unsuccessfully opposed the subpoena of the commission in several courts. She eventually went to the Supreme Court, where a chief of justice has decided that for the moment it is not necessary to release the phone records.
The researchers had requested Ward’s text and call data from November 1, 2020 to January 30, 2021. According to the commission, he has repeatedly tried to make it more difficult to count the votes in the presidential elections.
Ward’s lawyers argue that the subpoena violates the fundamental rights of party members who communicated with her at the time.
Trump also sued
Former President Trump has also been sued in the investigation. He is also expected to refuse to cooperate.
Last week, the commission said there was “overwhelming evidence” that Trump “personally orchestrated” the day’s events by spreading false allegations of widespread fraud in the presidential election two months earlier.
