The Supreme Court of Colombia fails again in its attempt to appoint a new attorney general

MADRID, 7 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Supreme Court of Colombia failed this Thursday in its last attempt to appoint a new attorney general to replace Francisco Barbosa, and has set a new plenary session for March 12 in which the issue will be addressed again.

As detailed by the president of the Colombian Supreme Court, Gerson Chaverra, the 23 judges of the court have not achieved the necessary consensus to opt for any of the three proposed candidates, according to RCN Radio.

“After our ordinary session in the Plenary, although none of the three candidates reached the qualified majority to be declared as the new Attorney General of the Nation, there was (…) a fairly important majority,” said Chaverra.

The president of the Supreme Court has reported that the majority of the judges have opted for one of the candidates, although the necessary number of 16 supports has not been reached to choose the new prosecutor, who will serve for the next four years.

“It shows us that we are close to reaching consensus and the majority necessary for the election of the new Attorney General of the Nation,” said Chaverra, who emphasizes that the environment is “very productive and very important” ahead of March 12.

According to sources consulted by the aforementioned RCN Radio station, Luz Adriana Camargo has been the candidate who has received the most support, while Amelia Pérez has seen how her support in the Supreme Court room has deflated.
