The Supreme Court authorizes Virginia to eliminate supposed non-citizens from voter lists

Washington, Oct 30 (EFE).- The United States Supreme Court on Wednesday authorized a controversial plan by Virginia to remove 1,600 people from the voter registers because authorities suspect they do not have US citizenship.

The high court ruled in favor of the governor of Virginia, Republican Glenn Youngkin, after two lower courts opposed his plan.

In August, Virginia implemented a program that compared the list of registered voters for the upcoming Nov. 5 general election with people who identified themselves as noncitizens on their driver’s licenses.

About 1,600 people were told they would be removed from the voter rolls if they could not prove their U.S. citizenship within 14 days.

Some U.S. citizens reported that they were wrongly targeted and excluded from voter registration.

The U.S. Department of Justice and civil rights groups sued Virginia, saying it was purging voters too close to the election.

Under the National Voter Registration Act, during the 90 days before an election, states must suspend certain reviews of voter rolls to prevent errors from being made.

The Republican Government argued that this legislation cannot be applied when it comes to non-citizens who, therefore, do not have the right to vote.

The campaign of the Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), maintains without evidence that millions of undocumented migrants plan to vote in the elections on November 5 despite the fact that only citizens have the right to vote in federal elections.

Republicans demand stricter measures to verify the citizenship of voters, while Democrats and civil society organizations believe that this is a strategy to discourage the vote of certain racial minorities and low-income people who have more difficulties obtaining the vote. passport or find your birth certificate.
