The Hollywood actor himself comes from Uvalde in Texas, the city that was shaken by a horrific mass shooting at Robb Primary School on May 24.
19 young children and two teachers were shot and killed when 18-year-old Salvador Ramos entered the school.
The motive for the massacres is not known.
Visited the President
On Tuesday, McConaughey was in the White House, where he met with President Joe Biden, among others. The Hollywood actor known from a number of major films has engaged in the arms debate, and came with a very clear message when he met the press after the meeting.
– Power figures have failed to act. Can both sides rise? Can both sides look beyond the political problem and admit that we have a problem preserving life ?, said the actor from the podium according to CBS News.
McConaughey visited his hometown after the brutal massacres.
Matthew McConaughey says how parents in Uvalde told he and his wife, Camilla, how “they want their children’s’ dreams to live on. That they want their children’s’ dreams to continue to accomplish something after they are gone.” https://t.co/9BABjvTfZl pic.twitter.com/mlvGafUuM2

“You could feel the pain, the denial, the disillusionment, the anger, the guilt, the sadness, the loss of life and the dreams that were taken from them,” he told ABC News.
Met survivors
The actor also spoke to several parents who had lost their children.
– Each of the parents told us that they wanted their children’s dreams to live on, and that they would achieve something – even after their death. They wanted their loss of life to mean something, McConaughey said.
The purpose of the visit to the White House was to inspire politicians to change, said the Hollywood actor.
– The American people will continue to fight for the mission to keep our children safe. Because it is more than our right to do so, it is our responsibility to do so.
The arms debate has been discussed a number of times. However, McConaughey thinks the mood is different now.
– This moment is different. We are in a window of opportunity that we have not seen before. Now I really believe that a change can happen.
