The Superpower Documentary: Sean Penn’s Journey with Volodymyr Zelensky and the Russian Invasion of Ukraine

A trailer for the film, released on Wednesday, shows how Penn was caught off guard by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as he had originally intended to make a film about Volodymyr Zelensky’s journey from comedian and actor to Ukrainian president. Penn started working on the film already in 2021 and shot it together with Aaron Kaufman.

The documentary shows, among other things, scenes with Zelensky in Kyiv, when the first bombs fell on the city in February 2022. “We are just ordinary people who want to live in our own country,” the Ukrainian president tells Penn in his bunker. The American actor and his crew visited Ukraine at least seven times.

“Superpower tells the story of Sean Penn, who travels to Ukraine to learn more about Volodymyr Zelensky, the comedian-turned-president. It was supposed to be a fun movie, but it turned into a historical documentary,” reads the caption of the official trailer. Penn met the Ukrainian president several times. During one of the visits, he even gave him one of his Oscars and told him to keep it for the Ukrainian victory.

The actor and director also spoke with veterans from the Russian invasion of Crimea in 2014, with children, teachers, people who lost their homes, musicians, but also politicians, the paper described The Guardian. He also met recruits undergoing military training to defend their country against Russian aggression. “The Ukrainians will win. The question is at what cost,” Penn says in the documentary, which premieres September 18 on Paramount+.

At the same time, the official synopsis of the documentary calls Zelensky “the most important war leader of the modern era.” “This former actor-turned-president leads his country in conflict with a nuclear power and becomes an important leader in history,” reads the synopsis, which goes on to say that Ukraine’s superpower rests on the strength of its leader, its people, and ultimately its heart .
